During his tenure with BAH he continued to support the U.S. Intelligence Community as a Systems Engineer until retiring in 2008. Dave is a graduate of Central Michigan University with a MS in Personnel Management as well as from the University of Maryland with a BS degree in Industrial Engineering. Dave is married to Margy and they have two gown sons, D.J. and Michael who live in New York City and Atlanta, respectively.

Smith Mountain Lake, VA (April 1, 2009) - Goodwill Industries of the Valleys and Prudential Waterfront Properties, in cooperation with Franklin County, will host the 1st Annual Franklin County E-Cycling Day on April 18th from 9am – 5pm. The public will be able to recycle their donations at two convenient locations:

Rocky Mount Goodwill store, 1045 North Main Street
Prudential Waterfront Properties, 13247 Booker T. Washington
(Intersection Rt. 122 and Rt. 616 – at stoplight).

This E-Cycling event will focus on the recycling of computer equipment, small appliances, and electronics, all of which Goodwill accepts everyday at their retail stores and donation centers. The event is a way to increase awareness and knowledge of recycling and green initiatives throughout the Franklin County area.

The Franklin County E-cycling Day is an extension of the RECONNECTTM program, an alliance between Dell and Goodwill organizations nationwide. Beginning in October of 2008, Goodwill locally began offering the free computer recycling program. RECONNECT is designed to enable consumers to donate any brand of computer equipment, in any condition at Goodwill stores and donation centers. The computer equipment will be responsibly recycled by Dell with proceeds benefiting Goodwill job training and employment programs.

Items that will be recycled through the E-Cycling event include, but are not limited to:
Computer Equipment: (any brand, any condition) monitors, keyboards, CPUs, printers, scanners,
fax machines, computer cords, and any related computer equipment. It is recommended that
donors remove all data from hard drives and other storage media before donating to Goodwill.

Small Appliances: toasters, microwaves, blenders, coffee makers, mixers, vacuums, and food
processors.

Electronics: Clocks, radios, cell phones, and PDAs.

In fiscal 2007-2008, Goodwill kept over 10 million pounds of refuse out of local landfills throughout the 31 county, 14 city territory served in Virginia. Through successful salvage efforts, the organization works diligently to see that the community’s castoffs do not come back to harm the environment. The revenues generated through salvage operations support Goodwill programs, which train individuals and help place them in community employment.

Goodwill Industries of the Valleys, a United Way partner organization headquartered in Roanoke, serves 31 counties and 14 cities in the New River, Roanoke, and Shenandoah Valleys. Its mission is to help people and families in our community achieve a better life through work and independence. Smith Mountain Lake, VA (March 9, 2009) – The Aspen Corporation, based in Daniels, West Virginia, was recently awarded the Golf Course Industry Builders Legacy Award for Renovation of the Year with its work at The Water’s Edge Country Club. Golf course architect Richard Mandell worked closely with Aspen and The Willard Companies to undertake the extensive renovation specifically to update the golf course’s infrastructure and re-capture its standing as one of the top golf courses in the state of Virginia as it was when it first opened almost twenty years ago.

“I’m proud that with the cohesive team involvement of golf architect Richard Mandell and owner Ron Willard, we were able to complete the project within two weeks of the original deadline without compromising quality”, said Donnie Adkins, President of Aspen. Ronald Willard II was given the task of selecting the golf architect for the project and after interviewing several prospects and meeting with Mr. Mandell, he told his father, “You don’t need to talk to anyone else”. Richard’s task was to update the historic layout yet preserve the character of the site.

Richard Mandell Golf Architecture developed a Renovation Business Plan in 2005 and construction began the following summer. The challenge of implementing the plan in a timely fashion was complicated by the extremely sensitive site, with many golf holes bordering Smith Mountain Lake. But the strength of Aspen and willingness to provide the best product by the Willard family made Mandell’s task a walk in the park. The results speak for themselves. “I was quite impressed with Aspen Corporation’s ability to plan ahead and focus on the hot-button areas of the site without losing focus on the goal” said Richard. “To be involved in any award-winning project is flattering, but it is really a testament to the overall team, and particularly a contractor like Aspen.”

Ronnie Adkins, Vice President of Aspen, echoed those sentiments, “The Water’s Edge project success is an example of how important it is to put the right team in place on such a demanding golf course renovation.

Working with Richard Mandell made Aspen’s task a lot easier. He understood the importance of team work and provided the leadership to keep the project and team focused.” Ronnie stressed the Architect’s involvement was a welcome change from other projects. “Richard provided clear direction during his site reviews. Decisions on site changes were efficient and quick. He also provided a written description at the end of the walk- through that matched what we had discussed. I have never experienced that before”, Adkins pointed out.

The award was presented to Aspen at the Golf Course Builders Association of America’s annual dinner in conjunction with the Golf Industry Show on Friday, February 6, 2009 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Golf Course Industry, a national golf course management magazine, has sponsored the Builder Excellence Awards for five years specifically to recognize outstanding project construction in four categories: New construction, re-construction, renovation, and environmental achievement. Judging criteria included scope of work, degree of difficulty, quality of performance, and creativity among other considerations.

Smith Mountain Lake, VA (December 22, 2008) - The Willard Companies and its subsidiaries including Prudential Waterfront Properties, Smith Mountain Building Supply, Westlake Towne Center, Westlake Cinema and The Westlake, The Waterfront and The Water’s Edge Country Clubs, partnered again with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots organization for its fifth annual toy drive.

A record breaking 600 toys were donated over a four-week campaign and will be distributed as gifts to needy children throughout Smith Mountain Lake, Franklin County and Roanoke Valley communities. According to Christopher Finley, Director of Marketing for The Willard Companies, “We are very fortunate that our employees, country club members, customers and retail tenants have enabled the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve help fulfill the Christmas dreams of our region’s neediest children.” The toys were picked up on Wednesday, December 17 and will be distributed on Christmas Eve.
